Here's my latest column from the New Zealand Herald. Looking at murder rates, we can see that we are safer now than we've been for more than three decades.

Read it here.

The problem with the figures is how murder is defined. That may sound silly but there are cases of people convicted of manslaughter who may have been convicted murder previously. This may may be due to soft judges or changes in legislation.

There are even cases like that of Stephen Dudley where the two responsible for his death were allowed to plead guilty to assault with intent to injure and got discharged without conviction and got permanent name suppression.

For the figures to mean something Jarrod Gilbert would have to include the figures for manslaughter separately and combined.
